The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Green Houses is a Home for the Aged located in the Rivertown District of Detroit, Michigan. The building is an adaptive reuse of a 1950’s pharmaceutical building. It is connected to the assisted living building of the Thome Rivertown home for seniors.
The building is a three-story facility that houses 21 seniors on the upper two floors, a rooftop outdoor garden space and a first-floor café. Each of the resident floors is designed specifically for the housing concept created in Tupelo Mississippi called Green Houses. In addition, the facility is designed and constructed as a skilled nursing facility, for potential use in the future.
Floor number 2 includes an exterior porch, a den, an office, full kitchen facility, dining room, Living room and 10 resident bedrooms. Each bedroom includes bed, night stand, full bathroom, wardrobe closet, hand wash sink, patient lift system in ceiling from bed to bathroom, lockable medication cabinet and television. In addition, this floor also has a beauty/barber shop and spa area. The third floor is identical to floor 2 except the beauty/barber shop and spa area is another resident room, thus 11 resident rooms on floor 3.
The rooftop garden space is designed and built to allow seniors and family members to experience a park like environment without leaving the facility. It includes live green roof plantings, a large sun shade, concession stand, tables, chairs, benches and senior planter boxes for the residents to grow their own vegetables.
